2010 Battle on the Bluff Results

The NPC 2010 Battle on the Bluff Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini was held July 24 at Sam's Town Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Promoter Chris Caudy, owner of Next Level Training, Memphis (also an NPC judge and bodybuilding champ), delivered an outstanding event as expected! As you may know, this is just the second year for NPC bikini events, and the bikini girls really turned out!

We were so disappointed that we didn't get to attend (Jimmy was competing at the Nationals in Pittsburgh) but Chris was kind enough to share results with me so that I could share them with you!

Special shout out to Dottie Wendler, Nicole Conner and Terry Kimble for their first bikini competitions! Great job! Also, shout out to "Rabbit" Broadnax, without a doubt my favorite high-energy crazy man to watch in the gym!

NPC Battle on the Bluff 2010 Date Change!

To everyone who is interested in competing in or attending the 2010 NPC Battle on the Bluff Bodybuilding, Figure, and Bikini Competition, there has been a date change! This year the competition will be held on Saturday July 24, 2010.

Please make a note of this on your calendar. Chris Caudy, an NPC judge and owner/trainer of Next Level Training in Memphis, is the promoter and he puts on a fab show. It just keeps growing every year!

The event is held at Sam's Town Hotel and Casino in Tunica, MS. Entry forms will be posted at http://www.battleonthebluffbodybuilding.com/, so watch the site for the updated form. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster or on-site at the door, but I'd get tickets early. You can purchase tickets to the pre-judging for Saturday morning and also for the Final Show Saturday night. Weigh-in/check-in for competitors will be Friday evening. I've not heard for sure, but I'm hoping he uses SunBlast Mobile Tanning again this year as they did a fantastic job last year.

More to come as we get closer to the big event...

NPC Battle on the Bluff 2010

EDIT: There has been a date change! The new date for the NPC Battle on the Bluff Bodybuilding 2010 is Saturday July 24, 2010!

This year the NPC Battle on the Bluff Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini contest will be held on Saturday June 26, 2010. The promoter is Chris Caudy, of Next Level Training in Memphis, TN. Typically the contest is held in Tunica, MS at Sam's Town Hotel and Casino. You can watch the website for updates and entry forms and also watch Sam's Town and Ticketmaster to obtain more information and tickets, and I will be posting about it as well.

My husband Jimmy is rounding out his winter season with a continued focus on muscle building. It's time to clean up the eating a little more, be sure to take in adequate calories and begin some metabolic work on his off days. As of right now, he's added about 5 pounds of muscle since last year while maintaining a comfortable single digit bodyfat. Not too bad for a 60 year old guy! This strategy seems to pay off for him. He maintains about a 90% clean diet with ample calories, but doesn't bulk up to the point that he'll lose all his muscle trying to lean back out.

The 2010 NPC Battle on the Bluff should be a great show again this year. For more info on last year's show please see my previous blog post here. I'll be sure to post throughout the season again this year along with pictures and other info you may find helpful.

If you plan to compete at Battle this year in bodybuilding (men and women), figure, fitness or bikini, you have exactly 154 days before peak week!

NPC GNC Teen, Collegiate and Masters National Championships 2009

My husband Jimmy just competed in the 2009 NPC GNC Teen, Collegiate and Master's National Championships held July 16-18 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This was a remarkable national level competition by promoter Gary Udit. There were over 400 competitors in the categories of bodybuilding, figure, bikini and fitness. The event was held at the Sheraton in Station Square in the area of Pittsburgh called the "South Side". We encountered friendly and helpful people everywhere. It was a tremendous effort and a very well organized show. This is definitely a show to see. The official photographer is J. M. Manion but you can see competitor pictures and competition results (placement) already on Muscular Development.

The interesting thing about this one was the fact that it was focused on particular age groups; teen, collegiate and masters. The masters group is basically defined as men age 40 and older, and women age 35 and older. Teens must be 19 or younger and collegiate had to be 25 years or younger. All competitors had to be members of the National Physique Committee (NPC) and US citizens. In addition, the event was an IFBB Pro Qualifier. Pro cards were awarded to the Overall Winner of Men over 50, Men over 60, Women's Bodybuilding over 35 and over 45, Figure over 35 and over 45, Bikini over 35 and the top 2 placers in the Men's Over 40 Overall. Needless to say it was quite an exciting weekend and the energy was palpable for three days solid.

We arrived on the day of weigh-in/check-in. Jimmy weighed in at 180 for this one, about 7 pounds shy of the top weight for his class, which was Men Over 60 Middleweight. He had put in a lot of work on his training, diet, posing and general preparation all year, but especially during the last 3 weeks. We packed a lot of the food he would need, and figured out that the way to fly with a cooler is to use bags of frozen veggies as ice packs to get through security! He also measured 6.4 % bodyfat two days before prejudging. This was his leanest ever.

I'm slowly learning some of the tricks to prep week for these competitions. For many, the beginning of the week shows the nice results of a very lean diet and being fully hydrated. Then the real fun begins by manipulating sodium, potassium and water for the leanest, driest look possible. This makes a big difference in muscle and vein appearance during judging. Oh, but that's not all. Many competitors (my husband is now one of them) also have to throw in strategic carb manipulation during the last 24-48 hours to fill the muscles out if they have a flat look. This is quite a tricky process and while there are some basic guidelines, it varies from individual to individual. Not so lucky for me was the fact that Jimmy's trainer, Chris Caudy was not there! Chris is a bodybuilder, personal trainer, event promoter, NPC judge and owner of Next Level Training in Memphis. He gave me a crash course before we left and we were on our own to get it right.

Most Muscular pose before the Evening Show

The competitors were fascinating to me. I enjoyed walking around and seeing them all during the weekend. We watched a few photo shoots from a distance and met several competitors and their friends/families. It's amazing to see what bodies over age 35 can accomplish. The hotel lobby was quite a site at any given time of the day. Chairs were covered with sheets due to all the spray tanning and everywhere you looked you could see competitors eating from disposable containers. Most of the time it was chicken, oatmeal, eggs, white or sweet potatoes, brown rice, steak, etc. The guys have it tough enough with all the exfoliating, shaving or waxing, tanning, and posing, but it's hard to believe what the women go through. They have to do all of those things plus pick out a suit, decide on hair and jewelry, and for the figure girls, learn how to walk in 4-6 inch heels!

I'm very proud of Jimmy. He looked and presented himself the best ever at this one. It's not easy when you are doing it naturally. He won 1st place in his weight class, Middleweight Men Over 60. He did a super job and earned it! Once you win your class, you then compete against the winners of the other classes in your age group. After being taken through some quarter turns and mandatory poses, the pose-down begins. It's a fun free-for-all style posing for 30-60 seconds to determine the overall winner. The heavyweight guy won it, but Jimmy had fun and it was good experience! Of course I'm not biased, but I thought Jimmy looked the best! He feels very blessed to be able to train the way he does, especially going into his sixties.

Posing for the photographers at the trophy presentation. It's hard to take a picture while you're screaming.

A sign the grandbabies made before we left for the trip!

This year one of the long-time competitors, and a several-time winner of the Men Over 70 group, turned 80 years old. He called the promoter and said "what do we do now?". The promoter discussed it with the NPC and a category for Men Over 80 was added. He was the sole competitor in his age group and took home a first place trophy. He still looks good and presents himself well! He rocked the house with his 60 second routine to music at the evening show and got a standing ovation.

Whether you compete or not right now, if you're not training, get with it. You never know if you might find yourself on stage in front of a packed house in a posing suit at 80 years old!

Unfortunately, names of the competitors are not included, but you may be able to match some people up based on whether or not you can see their competitor number in the snapshot.

You could attend and take your own pictures next year! Better yet, why don't you compete? You have 12 months. Get going!

NPC Battle on the Bluff 2009

Battle on the Bluff is an annual NPC bodybuilding, figure and bikini contest presented by Chris Caudy. It will be held at Sam's Town Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi on Saturday evening June 27, 2009 at 7pm. The bodybuilding divisions include novice, junior, teen, open, masters (men over 40), grandmasters (men over 50) and female bodybuilding. Women's figure will include a masters category as well. This will be Jimmy's (my husband) first competition for 2009 (4th total).

If you have never been to a bodybuilding competition, you should find one and go! While the pros are fantastic, I tend to like the flavor of the amateur shows. Most of these men and women will never go pro, but they put a tremendous amount of time and effort into training, nutrition and general preparation. I would have never thought to go to one until Jimmy was encouraged to enter his very first competition last year. Check out Living with a 59 Year Old Mesomorph for how all that got started! The amateur shows have strict rules and regs and are very well run but they offer a chance to mingle with the competitors and you get to meet many of the family members that have supported them through the process, which makes it feel a bit more personal.

Never mind that Jimmy was the actual competitor, by the time we got to our first show last year I was quite traumatized by the contest prep training schedule, macronutrient juggling act, ordering french-cut posing trunks, the posing practice sessions, selection of show music, last-7-day nutrition lockdown, teaching him to shave areas other than his face and the very scary tanning process. I still feel nauseated at the smell of a certain brand of tanning solution that I won't mention by name to protect the innocent. I had no idea what to expect and could literally write a dedicated blog post on each of those items. Needless to say I was quite the shy spouse at the first show weigh-in, but by the next day I was yelling out Jimmy's number during prejudging with a loud woo-hoo along with shouts to show more quad. That's what spouses do at these shows apparently.

Last year by competition time Jimmy was around 7% bodyfat. That was fantastic, but he wanted to add more muscle for this year if possible. He loosened up a little on his eating during the winter months to modestly increase his calories but basically continued to eat whole foods focused on a foundation of lean protein and fibrous veggies with fruit, healthy fats and whole grains thrown in. He wasn't afraid to cheat here and there. He topped out in the winter at 15 pounds heavier, but never even got to 9% bodyfat. Now that he's been leaning back out he's dropped fat but is maintaining the muscle nicely.

His priority areas the last several months were his lats, delts and pecs. He has really improved his front lat-spread pose. We've figured out we like his left delt and his right pec the best, go figure. His trainer won't even let him work his calves, they are so big. I wish I had a dollar for every pull-up he's done this winter. He's now also doing weighted dips and has abs like batman. His quads are a challenge area for him that he's continuing to work on, but his hams are looking nice. It's amazing the more you understand about how much work it takes to get specific muscle groups to stand out or get that shredded look. It's tough!

I will continue to post since we are officially 5 days out from the first weigh-in. This should be a fun summer!

Living with a 59 Year Old Mesomorph

In March 2008 I talked my then 58 yr old mesomorph husband into getting his body fat measured by a local trainer just out of curiosity. He comes home with paperwork showing his skin-fold measurements and a body fat calculation of 10.4%. I knew he looked good, but living with someone walking around at that body fat without even trying almost made me mad!

The trainer, Chris Caudy, who also specializes in body building, gave Jimmy all the information on an upcoming body building competition. He told him if he wanted to do it, he could get him ready. Jimmy decided to give it a try. Why not? He liked him and wanted to train with him even though he'd never thought about bodybuilding.

His training brought about amazing changes in his body. He had been guilty (like most of us) of gravitating to his favorite workouts and not shaking it up enough. Well, in literally 2 thirty minute sessions a week Chris shook him up alright. He worked his tail off, tightened up his diet and competed the first time (just 10 weeks later I must say) in June 2008 at the NPC Southern Classic, just under 8% body fat. Jimmy had never even seen a bodybuilding competition, much less thought about entering one. He ended up doing 3 competitions total last year and here's how he ranked:

Not bad for a newbie starting in his late 50's. It was an interesting process to say the least. We had to learn about entering, the weigh-in, mandatory posing, shaving, tanning, developing a posing routine and the flow of the competitions from pre-judging to the final show. I must say the most interesting and somewhat traumatic part of the process at first was figuring out the tan. This pic was taken in our hotel room, so you can see the difference in what the tan looks like in normal light vs. on stage (above).

This year he will compete in the following:

He turns 60 in July, so the Pittsburgh and Murfreesboro events will be Grandmasters Over 60.

It's fascinating to watch his body change. He's still as lean in terms of body fat, but has put on several pounds of muscle in the last year. Not everyone has a God-given mesomorph body type, but it just shows that it's never too late in life to get started. A lot can be accomplished with hard training and balanced nutrition. I will continue to post our adventures along the way this year.

Chris Caudy of Next Level Training in Memphis is Jimmy's trainer in-season. Jimmy is a member of the NPC for competition purposes. Please see my disclosure statement.
